We're bound and determined to maintain our own pool (currently using a company to help while we get acclimated) and we got the Taylor K-2006 test kit. 110% out of my element here and am already confused. Looking at the steps for Free & Combined Chlorine (FAS-DPD) test, under the 1st step: "NOTE: For 1 drop = 0.2 ppm, use 25 ml sample. For 1 drop = 0.5ppm, use 10 ml sample." How do I know which to use, the 25ml or 10ml sample?

Use the 10 ml sample. You don’t need the accuracy of the 25. 10 lets you save reagents (fewer drops to total and only one heaping scoop of the powder needed). You just count drops and divide by two for your answer.

I was really intimidated by my test kit at first. It’s second nature now, and I’ve just been teaching my neighbors how to do it. You’ll get there. Folks here will help.

I imagine that in Austin you’ll have high Total Alkalinity and Calcium over time. I often use the 25 ml sample for my first test of the season for those, but then I use 10 going forward because it’s a lot of drops otherwise.

+1 on the 10ml test method. You don't need more precision and much easier to calculate just count the drops and divide by 2.
