Hi all - I moved into a house with a pool a couple years ago (last year was the first season with it). Only a couple months ago, I discovered TFP and started educating myself on how everything works. Up until then, I've been relying on pool stores/services for everything. My pool has a SWG. I know for sure that there was at least one time (maybe a couple) when a pool store recommended I add "pH down" to my pool and sold it to me. Now that I have discovered TFP, it appears that this is NOT good to add to a SWG pool, as the sulfates can damage the salt cell. Going forward I will only use muriatic acid, but how worried should I be that there may be sulfates in my pool from adding dry acid in the past? I honestly don't know how much I've added - I think it was only one time, but can't be sure - I was just blindly following instructions. I believe the only way to get rid of sulfates is to drain the pool. The pool has not been totally drained/filled since last year, but I have drained several feet a few times and refilled (vacuuming to waste, also evaporation, etc.). Should I test for sulfates? Could it still be causing damage? I may be replacing my salt cell soon, and I especially want to make sure I'm not damaging the new one.
