I have an old Hayward S240 two piece side valve filter that the top is cracking quite a bit and leaking more than is reasonable. I'd like to just get a new top half for it but anything I can find is more than half the price of a new filter.

In the near future I'm thinking of going to a VS pump and adding a heater. The filter I'm waffling on is a Hayward S270T2, 350lbs of sand, 27" dia with a turnover of 35,500 in 8 hrs.

Is there something better out there I should take a look at ?

filters are all about the same from brand to brand. Rule of thumb is get the biggest you can get, because it would be less time between backwashings.

If you are considering something other than sand, then consider the time and effort you want to spend cleaning, backwashing etc.
DE requires backwashing and replenishing the DE. You'll occasionally need to pull the DE grids and clean them.

Cartridge doesnt get backwashed, but cleaning means taking the top off pulling the filters and washing them down. It takes me about 1.5 hours start to finish to clean my big 4 cartridge filter and I do it twice a year. But its fine for me, because I have plenty of time on my hands and I dont have to worry about backwash water in the yard or topping off the pool afterwards.

Again, bigger the better and as far as any type of filter you consider, I dont think brand matters one bit.
