Sudden increase in pool water level

Hi all

Looking for validation of mine, or new opinions of yours...

We have winterized our pool - standard approach: drain water below jets, blow out lines, seal returns and supply, close equipment down (sand filter, pumps, etc.), and of course water balance. Once all done, we cover pool with a winter tarp.

The water level in the pool two weeks ago (once I could lift tarp to take a peak), was below my first step (where it should be), and the skimmer basket was dry. We had a bit of a thaw, and some rain, and so the snow/ice on the winter tarp began to thaw. It is during this time that I start pumping water off the tarp in preparation for opening.

Two days ago I lifted the tarp again and noted that the water level in the pool had risen to above the first step, and was now high on the skimmer basket.

The most obvious reason in my mind is that the winter tarp has a hole in it, and has released a whack of water into the pool. I am in the process of pumping the tarp off, recognizing that if there is a hole in the winter tarp, at some point I will be pumping my pool water out, at which point I guess I will clean as much **** off the tarp (leaves mostly), and just pull it off...then clean and balance the pool.

Is this the right approach?

Thanks to one and all...
