Starting up sand filter/ pump for first time...

We're starting up our new to us Hayward sand filter and pump today. We have a small amount of debri in the deep end of the pool but its fairly clean. Should we start with a backwash cycle or filter cycle? Thanks! We love this site and appreciate all the help

Go ahead and put it on filter for a little while - just note the PSI when you are running, when you are vacuuming, etc. Look for good pressure coming from the jets. Post back and describe what is happening.

Well my husband went out to turn it on and it's staying on for about 2-3 seconds then its tripping the breaker. Any ideas why?

Nm, he got it going! But our pressure gauge isn't working at all. Also, it seems that it's pulling water into the skimmer quickly for a minute or two then it slows down quite a bit then starts again... Not sure if that's normal?

What is your water level? At least half way up the skimmer. Sounds like your sucking air into the skimmer (forms a vortex). All the valves on the suction and return side open?

Actually the water was a little low, maybe an inch past the skimmer opening, we've had the hose in abd its filling up. After a few minutes the pressure leveled out and it's been running normal for about an hour. Definitely seemed liked air was getting in. My husband's picking up a gauge today, for now it's running in filter and seems to be doing its job. I'll post psi later, thanks!
