So last week on June 19th I had these light brown colored stains pop up in my above ground pool. Tested water with Taylor K-2006 and everything was fine chlorine wise. However, pH was 7.8. I tried brushing the stain and nothing happened. I looked and found a rusting washer / screw on steps (see 2nd photo). I am also on well water but the spigot does go through the water softener. However, I did go ahead and buy a RV filter attachment for the hose now. I brought the pH down to 6.8 and chlorine to below 1 and added PoolMate metal out per instructions to help prevent further staining while I wait to get powder ascorbic acid. Algaecide was also added. I also removed the pool stairs.
Last night the ascorbic acid arrived and I added per TFP forum instructions. Kept adding and ended up with adding 5 lbs last night and does not look like it did anything and the stains look worse than last week.

First photo is from when I first noticed.
The rest of the photos are from this morning.
It’s getting worse and spreading and getting darker.
