So I started my 1st SLAM today using all the tools here. My numbers were the following when I started:
PH = 7.2
FC = .5
TA = 70
CYA = 70

I added the dosage the SLAM table called for = 985 oz. to reach SLAM Target FC = 28.
An hour and a half later I ran 1st FC test and here's where I'm questioning my test kit/reagent or my intelligence. I pulled 10ml (.5 ppm) volume from the pool and added the 2 dippers of the R-0870 turning the sample dark pink. I started adding drops of the R-0871 and around 44-45 drops in the sample had a slight pink to it but not colorless as it has normally done under non-slam scenario. I stopped adding R-0871 at 90 drops (when I ran out mostly of patience and almost of R-0871). Is the 44-45 mark the best I'm going to get and the reading of FC (22.5)?

Going to need to go locate more R-0871 before I can continue either way.

Thanks for any help clarifying if I'm going about this in the correct way.

Welcome to TFP! :wave: Remember, when you are using the 10 ml water sample size, you only need one generous scoop of powder. The 2-scoop thing is for people using the larger 25 ml sample. Having said that, I'm not so sure that's your problem. Sounds like you did everything correctly with the 10 ml sample size and mixing until clear and divide in half. The "clear" part is what you are questioning.

Is there any chance your pre-SLAM FC test was incorrect? That you had more FC than you though and therefore the current FC is much higher? Maybe try a quick test with tap water?

Thanks for the quick reply.

On my test kit (Leslie's 81329) the Free Chlorine test does not indicate a different amount of R-0870 for 25ml vs 10ml and therefore I've always followed that procedure. If I can get by with just adding 1 dipper that would be great. That being said I don't have enough R-0871 here on hand to continue testing at regular intervals. I live in a small town where there are not any retail stores that I can just grab that, closest store that has it is 45min one way.

Greg, it's not as accurate, but to help you stay in the ballpark, use a 5 ml water sample size. One scoop of powder. Each drop equals 1 FC. If you have a syringe laying around to measure the 5 ml that's ideal. If not, it's the old eyeball-calibration method. :crazy:

Go to TFTestkits.net and order the SLAM option.
Also order any other reagents you are low on.

How old are your reagents?
If more than one year old, consider ordering a full refill kit.

If you order today, they will ship tomorrow and you should have them by Friday or Saturday.
