I am getting sand from my Pentair Triton filter coming into my pool through the return ports when backwashing. I remember reading there are some kind of fins or parts that need to be replaced when this happens. Can someone explain what I need to replace and how to do it? Will I have to remove all the sand from my filter?

I am watching the videos in the stickie thread now, regarding deep cleaning a sand filter. I think maybe the laterals need replacing.

Correct. When sand exits the filter, it means either a lateral is bad (i.e. cracked) or perhaps became dislodged from the lower hub assembly. Also interesting however that the sand is making its way to the return jets when backwashing. Does your filter have a multiport valve or a push-pull plunger valve?

I assumed it was happening when I backwashed but I could be wrong. My multiport valve is not on the filter but along a pvc line. The filter is only a few years old. I'l take some pics.
