Rusted pool walls

Hi— I’m looking for a little bit of insight here. We have a doughboy pool bought new in 2017. Last year the liner started to tear at the seam so we filed a claim & received a new replacement liner. Fast forward to this spring when the pool company came to install our new liner. When they removed the old liner, the pool walls were rusted all the way around the pool. They stopped the install & contacted doughboy on how to proceed. Doughboy said that the walls needed to be replaced. Our pool was installed by the largest pool company in our area & they stated they have never seen anything like this on a 5 year old pool. They couldn’t give us any good reason why our walls would be in such bad shaped. Everyone we talked to there was baffled. We ordered new walls which was partly covered under their warranty. My question to the forum is —- 1. Has anyone ever seen this before & 2. What possibly could have caused it?

Side note: the green is because we didn’t close the pool this winter since we knew we were getting a new liner in the fall.

A leaking liner may be letting water through and then the metal panels just site there moist for a long time. Rust will be inevitable in that situation.

I agree with that statement but the liner was only torn at the very top above the water line. I find it odd that it rusted in the middle of the pool, all the way around.
Obviously I don’t know for sure, but condensation can form in really tight places. Even if the rip wasn’t under water, if air can get in there then moisture can as well.

Ideally the walls should have been coated to prevent rust as much as possible.

You can read my rusty pool story in the link in my signature. My liner never leaked, but the rust spots would weep. I believe it was condensation between the liner and pool wall combined with inadequate rust proofing. The rust proofing coat on your pool may have been improperly applied or not applied at all. Unfortunately things aren't built as well today as they used to be.
