Ok... a couple of weeks ago I was battling the pool trying to get it clear. I ended up ordering new testing chemicals as mine were old/used up completely. When I got the new testing supplies my CYA was 75-ish. I did the test at least twice because this was signicantly up from my prior tests with the old chemicals. We have a 16000 gal pool and have been using 75 as the cya while intermittently battling the pool (we haven't been home a lot to keep at it consistently). Knowing the CYA doesn't just drop I haven't tested it for a while. In the last week we have gotten almost 5inches of rain (thus displacing some of our water out through the skimmer once it was over full). I decided I should check and see it had gone down any and now it is MAYBE 20. HOW????

Only thing I can think of is a combination of testing variance, losing some from the water overflow, and perhaps some bacteria eating the stabilizer. One or more combination of the three perhaps.

I lose quite a bit of CYA to evaporation, mostly because of the chiller. Given how hot and dry this summer has been, I’ve had to add more fill water than usual - sometimes 3x per week. My CYA went from 70ish to 50ish fairly quickly. But then again, who really knows with that @$*#*! dot test!
