Hi, I am an unexperienced pool owner who needs to replace a dying Challenger Medium Head 1 HP pump for a 13,000 gallon pool (no spa). I thought about replacing it with a Hayward Super Pump 1 HP, but a professional recommended a Hayward TriStar 1.85 HP variable speed. It is more than twice the price of the single speed and it will hurt my finances. But if it is the best choice, I guess I'll do it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Here is a chart showing power usage. Keep in mind this is for a 3HP pump so yours will be lower but you can see the cost savings when using a variable speed pump. Single speed pumps run at 3450 all the time.

In Texas, where we don't winterize and the pump runs all year - VSP all the way.
The chart above tells the story - I run 1400 rpm's 24/7 for less than $1 a day.

The VSP pays for itself very quickly due to the reduced energy consumption.
