Does anyone have experience with the recharge process for Zeo Filter Media. There is so many conflicting points of view on this topic online.

1. Should it be done at all? If so, after how long after initial installation.
2. Should the salt brine method be performed or should I use the chemical recharge products? What type?
3. What is the recommended procedure?

I am so confused over this topic due to such a wide range of opinions and I know some online are just trying to sell some type of product.

Any advice or recommendations from those who are experienced with this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

I have no idea ... sounds like more snake oil if you have to "recharge" filter media ;) What does that even mean? The media is only there to catch debris, so what needs to be recharged?

Nothing wrong with plan old pool filter sand.

1. I do feel that the Zeo Filter Media does seem to filter (at least my pool anyway) a bit better. When I replaced the filter media in early 2016, I opted to use about half ZeoBest/ half sand. I did notice a slight difference in better water clarity (albeit, not a considerable amount). Ever since, I have had good luck with it.

2. The recharge process is supposed to change the ion qualities of the Zeo Material. What my belief is however, is that this is more important for large aquariums and for koi ponds since they are more concerned with ammonia absorption and nitrates.

3. I couldn't agree more that I think the recharge chemicals being sold are of the "snake oil" variety (like so many other chemical pool additives). :D

4. My belief at this point is to not bother with the "recharging process" and continue to march with good regular backwash's. I just thought I would survey the other Zeo users on here to get their point of view.

Thanks much!!

I had sand at the beginning, but didnt have much luck with it since in Mexico you can only get either 10-20 or 20-30 size sand. Since the 10 would go through the laterals i had to use 20-30. It really took a long time to clear my pool. Then I added DE and the filter would not catch the DE and ended up with a very cloudy pool. Then i opted to remove 1/2 the sand and add Zeolite. It worked very well to remove the DE but, when i had to backwash to clear the DE, it lost all the filtering qualities. Opened up the filter and found out that by backwashing and Rinsing, the Zeolite had mixed with the sand instead of the Zeo being on top of the sand. I realized it had to be all sand or all Zeo, so ended removing all the mixed sand/zeo and refilling with Zeo. I guess you have relized by now that the Zeo needs a very thorough soak/backwash/soak/backwash/rinse cycle to get it clean the first time. When i was advised of doing the brine, i was perplexed, what more brine than a SWG pool @3500ppm of salt. So I skipped that step. When Zeo is used in water softener systems i can see the reason to brine but not on a pool.

One of my main problems at this stage is if I try to vacumme at higher than 1500 RPMs, then dirt starts to come out of the returns. This is driving me nuts, figured its either the multiport handle spring being to soft or the Zeo putting higher resistance to water flow, which i doubt because my pressure never rises above 7psi@1500rpms. Im trying to get my installer to loan a new mutliport to test at higher rpms.

Wow never had that problem. Even at near max rpm I don't get anything but water out of the returns. It just might be the multiport??

What I did, was put the zeobest on the bottom and sand on the top. I opened up the filter a few weeks ago (I decided to repaint the filter) and when I looked inside, everything "seemed" to be in order.
I'm thinking this "recharge" deal is not applicable to pool applications. We'll see what others weigh in with.

Thanks much for the thoughts...
