Pump question

Hello All,
I will be purchasing a new filter system this week. I am going to buy an EC40 D.E. Hayward filter. My question is whether I should get a 3/4 h.p. pump or go with a 1 h.p. 2 speed pump. I would like to save money on the electric but also want what is best for my pool. I have an 18' A.G.P. with 48" water height. The pool gets sun all day on nice days. You likely want a two speed, what do you have currently?

The pool is used and was my parents. My dad had the same filter but when his 1 h.p. pump went he used a 1.5 h.p. pump believing bigger was better. We've been having issues and want to replace it.

I'd suggest a 3/4HP is the way to go. Single or dual speed depends on if you think the extra investment will be recouped saving on your electric bill.
