Pump Not Working Properly

I am having trouble with my pump and I cannot turn the motor shaft manually at all. It mostly will not start at all, but when it does it will run for about 30 seconds with a high pitched sound (kind of like very loud cricket noise) and then shut off again. Should I start by replacing the capacitor even though the motor shaft seems to be stuck? Just looking for the best place to start. Thanks for any input.

If the motor shaft won't turn easily and you hear a high pitched squeal when the motor does stop, chances are you have at least one bad motor bearing.

How old is the motor and pump?

You will probably need to replace the motor at a minimum.
The pump volute needs to be inspected for corrosion and other damage. If it's ok, you can get by with just a motor. If it's not, a whole new pump unit will be needed.

In either case, look into a variable speed (VS) setup.

If replacing only the motor, a "go-kit" with gaskets and seal will be needed also.

Hayward, Pentair and Jandy are the big three equipment manufacturers.
Some have used pumpsfrom Circupool, Black and Decker and similar brands with good results.
Maybe @Newdude has other suggestions as well.

I there any certain reason you are recommending this particular pump?
You dial down VS pumps to the HP you need. Larger pumps move more water at the same RPM, so it allows you to save energy using less RPM for the same task.

Single speed pumps are no longer available except for leftover stock and the new pumps are considerably more expensive. At that point the one I posted although larger than you need, is likely cheaper than what you'll find and save you money in the long run.

@1poolman1 might have some current favs. Hang tight.

Should I not consider the 1.5 HP CaliMar for my size pool? The three week back order is going to be tough. Also, there is a difference in port size from 2 inches to 1.5 inches with the 1.5 HP which should make it for more difficult install correct? Would like to do this on my own if at all possible.

Correct the 3hp calimar is on backorder, ask me how I know but the 1.5 hp will not give you any advantage on efficiency as you'll need to run it at the top end. Black and Decker, circupool and some others are the exact same pump with separate branding albeit not as cheap as the calimar.

You should. It's $445 from the same retailer. But the larger pump will save energy, and it's only $74 more.

Also check with your power Co. Many have rebates for VS pumps.

Changing brands all but guarantees you'll be replacing some PVC. At that point, adding reducers to change diameter is no biggie.
