Pump filter drain plug

Okay, so this feels like a stupid question, but I'm going nuts (haha).

We've got an air leak somewhere, so I replaced the pump filter and chlorinator gaskets. Still had a leak so I bought new drain plugs. The chlorinator one and the one that goes in the side of the pump filter fit just fine. But for the love of all that is holy, the one in front just turns and turns and turns, like it's too small. The old one won't go in, either. When I unscrewed the old one, it unscrewed just fine, with no indication that the threads were stripped. Is my only recourse to buy a whole new pump filter assembly???

Make sure there is not any debris caught in the threads and try again. If you hold the new and old plug side by side do the threads look different or do the plugs appear to be the same size? You can try a little pool lube on the threads of the old plug and try to screw it back in. You might also try some plumber's tape on the threads of new plug to see if that helps.

Nothing has helped. I think I just need a new assembly.
