Pool leaking

Recently purchased a villa in Greece. We had paid for the pool drainage to be modernised to a drain grate which looks fantastic however we've noticed that the water levels are dropping a fair amount. We've tried to work out where the water could be leaking from however our tests have only caused more confusion.. When we move the pump directly into the drain, both the pool and the pump water levels stay the same, however if we pump the water into the swimming pool, the swimming pool water drops.. If anyone has had similar experiences or knows of any way we can find the leak it would be much appreciated. Difficult finding an English speaking pool specialist over here.
