Pool Frog XL Pro without Pacs

Hi Everyone!

First time posting here, but have used the forum before to get some insight. I have a question that I haven't found a specific answer to just yet..

I have had the Pool Frog XL pro for the past 4 years (Yes...Extremely Expensive). After reading the forums, I received good advice and will not be using the mineral pacs anymore. Too expensive and adds unnecessary stuff to my water.

My question revolves around the chlorine pac. Can I add chlorine tabs (either 1 inch or 3 inch) directly to the canister without the "Pac"? Has anyone on here ever done this? If so, has it worked ok or caused any issues for you?

I've modified my chlorine pack with a screw off PVS piece that I can add the 1 inch tabs directly to and screw back up......but I would much prefer to add everything directly into the frog if others have done with success.

My other option if this isn't feasible was to replace with the Hayward incline auto chlorinator.

Let me know what you all think.

Thanks!

Hi, welcome to TFP! Chlorine tabs are going to cause issues with excessive CYA in the water over time. If you want to use tabs you need to stay on top of the water chemistry and stop using them when your CYA gets between 30-50 ppm. For short term use a floater would be better for your pool. You might be able to stuff a few pucks in the old frog container but it was not designed to be used in a high chlorine environment and you have zero control over how quickly the tabs will errode.
You should be using and FAS/DPD based test kit so you can keep a close eye on the chemistry and dose your pool properly. Once you hit 30-50 ppm for CYA you will need to switch over to liquid chlorine and stop using tabs.
