Good morning. I opened my pool by myself the first time yesterday (construction finished mid summer last year). Followed my checklist and everything went well, including the preliminary startup ( then shutdown until chem levels are good) of my new heater (Summit XL140).

I noticed some brown/gray loose powdery material on the bottom of the pool. When I tried to use my brush it seemed very loose and immediately resuspended in the water. I put our cleaner in the pool (Pentair Prowler 920) and it went to work. I came back about an hour later and there were black streaks on the pool bottom and black deposits on the tracks and brushes of the cleaner. Tried to use my brush on the streaks and I could remove them with some effort, but now the brush bristles are coated in black and the deposit feels slightly sticky and I could not wash it off with Dawn (my go to cleaner).

PB closed the pool last fall, adding shock and algicide then installing the solid cover (Solid loop-Lock with screen panels). Only thing I did all winter was pump out the pool as necessary to control the level.

Any ideas on what this is, and should I do anything?

Here are the chemicals levels at opening
FC 5 ppm
CC 0
pH ~7
TA 50 added ~ 4 lbs to increase
CH 120 added 4 lbs to increase
CYA 50 (leaving alone)
Salt 2400 (added 40 lbs went to 300 overnight, added an additional 40 lbs this morning)

That is odd. At first it almost sounded like you might be dealing with iron, but it wouldn't be sticky. Are you on a well? I suppose it's possible your water is showing residual signed of products added to the water by the PB who closed last season. When I think of sticky in the pool, I typically think of swimming oils, lotions or a scum line around the waterline. Maybe others will some ideas.

Thanks for the response. We are on city water, very good quality. As for sunblock or oils, this is a lightly loaded pool. Did not have any real scum lines last year. The only things that I remember the PB using on closing last year was non-copper algicide and shock, but, they may have added something that I did not see.
