Contrary to popular thought, not every Minnesotan lives near a lake, so we thought we would buy a place with a pool!

We live in Southeastern Minnestoa, near Rochester. My wife and I have four small children (8, 5, 3, 18mo's) that LOVE the water. This is our first experience owning or living somewhere with a private pool, so our family is very excited! Even more exciting, the pool came with a nice (at least it seems quite nice) heater installed, so we'll be able to use it more than the 4 or 5 days we call "Summer." :D

The very first thing I did after closing on the house was to search the web for a reliable and reputable website to help me learn this pool business and try and save some dough. Boy, was I excited when I discovered TFP! I've been lurking for a number of weeks, but finally decided to register. The information here is EXACTLY what I was hoping to find- Thank you!

One note: Being as we just purchased this house in late August, the few weeks we have left before I'll have to winterize it are sort of my "experimental" period. We have tons of new house expenses so some of the stuff I would normally want to get for the pool (like one of the test kits recommended here) will have to wait until next season.

Thank you in advance for the help and advice!

Welcome to the forum. One of the best resources you have for pool chems is Menards. Their pool shock is 12.5% chlorine and it is almost always very fresh and goes on sale couple times a year for $1.77 a gallon. I just ran out last week and had to start buying walmart bleach.

Don't close the pool until the water is below 60°, I wait til October to be safe. You also want to open the pool before water temps get to 60°.

Let us know if you have any questions.
