Hi, I'm planning to replace my existing single speed (1.0 THP Speck) with a 1.5 HP Intelliflo 3 VSF pump (I already bought the pump, I understand that a 3 HP might have been better). I need to get a pool installer out to take a look at installing it (I had Leslie's come out but that was a disaster).

My two suction lines at 1.5" (one to the skimmer and one through an opening about 18" under the waterline). I was reading that it can be beneficial to upgrade the plumbing from the 3-way valve on the suction side to reduce resistance. I currently have a Hayway 3-way valve with 1.5" plumbing on all three ports.
The position of my current pump does not work for the larger Pentair pump because the filter is in the way. I was wondering if it would make sense to get a 45 degree fitting and angle the pump (see picture below). I'm assuming a 45 degree fitting is better than a 90 degree fitting for flow resistance.

  1. Does it make sense to upgrade the suction pipe going into the pump with 2" PVC?
  2. Should I replace my 3-way valve with a 2" model?
  3. Does a 45 degree fitting make sense, or do you have other ideas on how to install the pump given my current setup?
Pictures below.
Thanks
Christian

Do it however it's easiest for you. The 1 inch poly (sprinkler pipe) suction and return will be the limiting factor. Some larger plumbing at the pad or an extra 90 or two never make any appreciable difference.

If you decide to replace the 3 way valve, use a rebuildable diverter valve, so that when it breaks as they all do, it's easy to fix.
