Metal Magic and FC consumption

I opened my pool to some staining this year. I put in 2 quarts of ProTeam MM and within hours, all the stains were gone. However I noticed a huge FC consumption. Does anyone know if MM will consume FC and if so, for how long?

I should add that the night before I put the MM in, I passed OCLT. So I doubt I have organics consuming the FC.

Thanks
Mike

What was your FC? How much did you loose?

Typically, it works the other way, where high levels of FC tends to break down the Metal Magic, which is why you don’t want to slam after applying it if possible. But of course, if the FC is consuming the mm, then the FC is being “used” so in that sense, my bet is that the portion of FC consumption attributable to the mm is normal.

Do also check that you have adequate cya to reduce FC loss, and note that if you used antifreeze on closing and any got into the water on opening that this will also increase your FC demand for a little while in the spring.

Thanks Swampwoman.

My CYA is 35 and it was quite sunny yesterday so maybe that's it. I'm not exactly sure how much FC loss, it just seemed high. It could be that everything is ok.

I normally keep my CYA at 70 since I have SWG, but I don't raise it till I know I'm done with Slamming. I don't run the SWG until everything is balanced and I know Slamming is finished.

I think I'll do a couple more OCLT's before raising the CYA.

I didn’t use Metal Free but I used another sequestrant SC-1000. Every time I used it (3 times) my FC went from 5 to 0 in less than 6 hours. I won’t use it again. The Orenda guy told me there was a “good chance” the “proprietary” ingredient may be masking the chlorine test. He suggested waiting 24-48 hours before testing again. Yeah right like I’m going to take a chance on my pool for 48 hours with FC of 0. No thanks.
