Looking for advice on CYA

I Started my opening SLAM yesterday and it probably will not finish until Monday or Tuesday morning as I had some brown algae taking hold. My CYA measures low at a little over 20, and while I like the low CYA for the SLAM, I typically run it at the high end of the scale (40-50) because of the Arizona sun.

We have probably seen the last cloudy day for a long time, but it is still early in the season and the sun is not so blistering. What do you think? From 20 CYA, do I add CYA now up to 30 or more, or just run tablets from here on out until it gets up to 40? Right now, I don't seem to be losing that much from UV in the SLAM.

Even one gallon of CYA is expensive and I can keep my levels up with tabs, chlorine will be cheap.

Thanks!

There is nothing wrong with using tabs, as long as you monitor the CYA (and you know what you are doing).

It’s fine to start out with the lower CYA, just use the chlorine/CYA chart to maintain proper balance. As it gets warmer and sunny you will need the higher CYA level to protect your chlorine. If you chlorinate with tabs your CYA level will just come up over time. Just don’t over shoot your target.
