Jandy RS / Aqualink Controller with S.R. Smith poolLUX Premier Controller

Hello everyone,
We are in the process of replacing our liner on our 20x40 inground vinyl liner pool. As it's torn up we're installing lights. Right or wrong we're putting in 3 LED RGB S.R. Smith Treo lights (this is what the builder knows and does).

I'm looking to know if anyone has ever integrated S.R. Smith Lights with their Jandy Aqualink controller?

I have two paths/options to explore:

1) Just control power to the lights using one of the Aux relays
2) Use the S.R. Smith light controller (which has an external relay input) to "control" the LEDs

I'm planning on going with the S.R. Smith pLX-PRM poolLUX Premier Lighting Controller, which does have provisions for an external relay connection. I just don't know if it's compatible at all with the aqualink.

The S.R. Smith unit is: S.R. Smith pLX-PRM poolLUX Premier Lighting Controller

The manual states:
Optional wiring for external relay control
1. The poolLUX Premier allows for standard (off/on) color mode control through a
3rd party, external controller. By connecting the two ‘relay’ terminals to a ‘dry
contactor’ relay (or switch) on an external controller, the poolLUX Premier will
advance the color one mode at a time when the dry contactor is closed and
opened once within 1.5 seconds.
2. A “soft off” mode can be enabled by a close and latching of the terminal contacts
for more than 1.5 seconds. Operation will resume when terminals are unlatched
for more than 2 seconds at the same brightness and color.

Does anyone know if that could be made to work with Aqualink?

Thanks everyone in advance,
Jonathan

Jonathan, I have ordered 2 of the treo lights from amazon warehouse to replace my 25 year old, dim, fiber optic lights. I chose not to order a smith controller at all because I am planning on using a simple 12v ac transformer and my Hayward ecommand 4 lights relay to turn them on/off and change colors (6 modes), these options are built into the lights themselves.

The smith controller you are considering allows additional light modes and dimming...but I believe ONLY if you use that unit for light control. If you use an external controller, I believe you will be limited to the 6 modes supported by the lights themselves...same as my situation and I came to the conclusion I don’t even need a controller...just a relay for on/off and a 12v ac power supply.

The documentation is not very good...I will be testing mine out after I get them tomorrow. One suggestion for you and the new install, why not the kelo lights? ...which are brighter. I would have chosen those but amazon warehouse did not have any used ones available.

These should work fine with the iAqualink. Connect to any unused relay in your system. Don't forget to properly install lights with a GFI and high mounted j-box.

Just want to add that per the instructions you listed this will work with Aqualink, looking at the product itself, you may end up losing some functionality. But you may be able to control basic functions with the Aqualink like on/off an changing the color, but will need to use the supplied remote for dimming. With the price of these, have you considered the Jandy lights?

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
Yes, fully agreed. I was hoping that one of the other brands that have direct programming in the aqualink would coincidentally react or be a direct substitute (color labels line up, etc). But with a rotation of 7 or so it’s not a big deal to control with on/off...

Agreed, there are other lights out there. This seems to be what this builder knows, stocks and goes with (and likely makes the most margin off of), so we kind of got this as our only choice... not ideal but a battle I decided not to fight.

Thanks everyone,
Jon

I received my treo’s today and tested them out with the transformer. Starting from my degraded fiber optic lights...these are going to be a huge improvement for me! They will be much brighter than my current fiber optic ones and I do like the color modes that they have. I think that an “effective dimming” will be possible by selecting amongst the colored lights. They are much better than I expected so hopefully you too will be pleasantly surprised!

I plan on installing mine this weekend...thanks poolgate for the mention of the gfi protection.
