I have a Jandy heat pump / Chiller, the unit is electric. Can I set the heat pump to a setting just above the freezing level to avoid the pool from freezing without breaking the bank? I will be away for a few days and didn't want to stress about anything?

The temp on the HP goes down to 40. Will the HP produce enough heat to satisfy not freezing? Or will the ambient temp be too low to create any heat? I don't want to just waste power/money if it won't heat. The water currently is 37, the temp is supposed to drop to significantly over the weekend and I suspect it'll try to freeze.

I thought freeze protection was built into the pumps not the heaters and simply circulate the water.

It does rotate the water and prevents the pumps from freezing, but the water itself will freeze up. I was just thinking to avoid the water from freezing.

In my mind I am thinking I am not running air conditioner in the house currently, to run the HP for a few days will not create that much extra money spent on the electric bill and prevent the pool from freezing putting let stress on the situation.

I just don't know if the HP will work in a <20 degrees environment.

I don't think a heatpump will produce any heat at all at that temp. They are pretty much useless below like 55.
