Removed the pre filter basket and housing yesterday to clean. Pump is now leaking from the bottom thru the screws which secure the impeller housing. The pre filter housing attaches to a connection on this housing. We did not dismount the cover. Open for suggestions?

I would remove that wet end again and check to ensure the gasket seal or whatever is used to seal those two parts together isn't pinched or out of place from the previous assembly. You might also apply a thin layer of pool silicone lube to that area as well to help it all stay in place when you reassemble it. Let us know if you are still having problems.

Let us know if you are still having problems.I’ll remove the basket housing again. Question though, the retaining nut, can you over tighten? Could that cause a stress to the cover pulling it forward?

If it's plastic probably yes. But I would think it would crack if that was the case.
