I wanted to give an update. I finally had my pool guy replumb everything from the pump to the pool. I took out the ball valve completely. Well, I still have the same problem! After about 8 hours, the pump is dry. So frustrating. I have never had such a persistent issue on the pool before. Oh well, not sure what to do next. The good news is that I figured out how to deal with the problem for now. I put on the timer to run the pump every 4 hours for 5 minutes. That way the pump doesn't go completely dry. This has worked. If I let the pump go completely dry, it takes about 20 minutes to prime this pump which I assume is very bad for the pump and motor.
