Hello all,
I'm in Houston, TX and have a ~10K/gal in-ground pool. It was in rough shape when I bought the house 8 years ago and it's currently looking as bad as I've ever seen it. I have a lovely crop of algae that defies everything I do to it.
My pool's redeeming feature is that it provides a stimulus to the equipment industry with annual purchases of equipment and chemicals.
It's also pretty to look at in the evening.
Small victories:
- Converted the niche light to LED and never looked back.
- Successfully figured out how to close the niche clamp with the minimum number of cusswords or lost hardware pieces.
- Replaced the 2 HP pump with a 1 HP pump based on actual calculations and a desire not hear an idling jet engine.
- Converted it from a suction side entertainment device to a Polaris 280 pressure cleaner.
- Rebuilt the Polaris 280 at least once. It's due for another upgrade and is lounging out of water until I get to it.
- Converted to a CircuPool SWG this year and ended my contributions to the chlorine tablet mafia.
- Installed CircuPool's vortex accessory and have been impressed with it.
- Installed "smart" timers that can be controlled through home automation and sold my Intermatic POS timers on eBay.
Past accomplishments:
- Rebuilt / Replaced DE filter twice before finally taking a hammer to it and throwing it away.
- Found and dealt with plumbing leak at skimmer while wondering how anything ever flowed through the pipe because it was kinked.
- Installed a Hayward cartridge filter.. but it's on my list next to Algae as things that require constant attention.
Current Issues:
- Algae
- Water chemistry
- Excessive filter maintenance. I've not had good luck with "washing" the cartridge filter.
Future Issues:
- Pool needs replastering (it sort of needed it 8 years ago..... it really needs it now)
- I'd like a pool heater (but not until the chemistry issues are solved)
- Next pool pump will probably be a VFD equipped pump (also hyped as a smart-pump).
