How do you tell if an old (Grey) Jandy Valve is bad?

I've recently removed covers from my (6) old type (Grey with grease knob) Jandy Valves since I found out I'm supposed to lubricate O-rings. How do you tell if the valve is still doing what it's supposed to?

1. On two of them, I noticed quite a bit of grit was on the curved face of the diverter inside the double rubber gasket square. Does that mean gaskets are not sealing and diverter needs replaced?

2. On two of them, I noticed a little "break" in the outside gasket square, but the inside looked solid. Should I replace the diverter?

3. Also, on these same two, the inside plastic wall of valve is slightly scored. Can this be lightly smoothed with emory cloth, or does entire valve need replaced.

4. After opening valves and cleaning well, I know to lubricate the large cover O-ring and the 2 smaller O-rings that go on the diverter handle rod, but do I also lubricate the square rubber double gasket on the diverter or does the grease knob take care of this?

5. I understand that I can get Jandy Never Lube Diverter Kits #4720 to replace all my old diverters and for more money, can get them with a red plug to put into the grease cup hole. Rather than spending the extra money, couldn't I accomplish the same thing by just leaving the existing grease cup to plug the hole?

I've ordered "Water Lube for Jandy Valve Grease Cap, Pool Filter O-Rings, Gaskets" to fill the grease cup and understand that once I get it all back together and grease cup is full, then I turn grease cup knob clockwise and that forces grease somewhere into valve. Then I'm supposed to rotate handle back and forth to spread the grease. This is a heavy grease that is very hard to wash off. I had to use gasoline to really clean up the grease cup after opening valve. I understand I'm supposed to do this complete job at least once a year if I keep the old diverters. [

I appreciate any feedback as I'm a pool novice.

If you replace with the neverlube diverter kits you won't need to lube again. It is usually a matter of time before the greasecaps break off and then you will have to plug. The kits come with everything except the lid o ring
