Hose to return line leaking

The first picture shows the old hose attached to the return. It started leaking. Husband trimmed the hose and reattached it but it continued to leak. We got a new hose and added threading. It continued to leak. We got a PVC fitting. It continued to leak. We added silicone. The leak stopped at both ends but the hose won't stay in the PVC fitting. The PVC fitting is the correct measurements. 1-1/2 x 1-1/4. So, we removed the PVC fitting, added more threading tape and silicone and reattached the hose like it was originally (without the PVC fitting). Now we're waiting until tomorrow before turning the pump back on to see if the hose stays on and doesn't leak. If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know!

The hose end slides over the fitting, and a hose clamp holds it in place. They are not meant to be trimmed and a Ferco fitting rigged up to hold it in place. A Fernco is not going to work, you cannot use a pipe clamp (a compression band) on a flexible hose that also compresses. it will never work. They are also not meant to be siliconed into place.

I am not sure what sort of PVC fitting you were trying to add. There should a hose fitting attached to your return - Threaded to go into the return and a smooth end with a small raised ring on the end to slide the hose over. You need a NEW hose. Once with factory ends on it. Do not buy the replacement ends that you can get for a vacuum hose and try to use them. Do not to trim it again and rig something up. Go get a new hose with the proper ends, and while you are at the pool store, get some new band clamps as well.
