Hopper walls overdug

The excavator I hired when building my pool got a little overzealous and the hopper wall on one side is too steep. It essentially goes from the base of the steel wall down to the deep end about a foot steeper than it supposed to. What's the best way of rebuilding the wall up? Would I be OK to throw dirt on it and compact and build out that way? Also, I have a lot of lose River rock. Does that all need removed before the vermiculite can be placed? Or can I tamp it in?

This happened to me, it sounds like yours wasn't as bad as mine was. Do you have any pictures you could share?

I'll share what I did, you probably won't like it but it ended up working out really well for me in the end, although at the time I was in panic mode and had no idea what to do. Mine was a combination of the excavator being over zealous and really rocky soil that just wouldn't hold any slope.

In this picture you can see the first dig, notice the shelf for the panels, and you can barely see the rebar in the hopper bottom that the slope should go to. I had a couple of feet of overdig here.

What I ended up doing was ordering 60 tons of roadbase and filling back in the hopper bottom, compacting and wetting every 4-6". Added some cost to the project, only took about a day of labor and a bobcat to fill it back up. Here is a pic of it almost filled back in.

Once this was done I let it sit for a few weeks waiting for the pool panels to arrive, once those arrived I had the hopper excavated again. Here is a pic of the second excavation, the wall slope held much better.

If you can share some pics it may help to see exactly what you are working with. Good Luck!

Hi there - we had a similar problem (our PB dug the pool 180 deg off - deep end where shallow end should be, etc.). Crushed rock fill was the solution here, which was correct answer for California. If fill with soil, need serious and consistent compaction (if my PB had proposed fill and compact, I would have required a geotechnical engineer to approve). Strongly recommend you check on state engineering codes where you live. Here is pic of our pool before shotcrete, showing "overexcavated" area filled with crushed rock under the rebar. Hope this helps.... good luck!!

thanks for the replies, my soil looks much like broschb, just not quite as rocky... I am out of town right now so I cant take any pics, but will when I get back. I am putting in pretty much that same pool. 16X32 with corner liner over steps...I'll look into the road base/compact/redig situation. @cowboycasey-that thread looks like a nightmare! He's got a great finished product though. I don't think mine's that severe ;)
