Several years ago before I retired I hired a pool service of variable quality and quit monitoring my pool chemistry. Yesterday I saw a green tinge to my still too cold to use pool and did a rapid colorimetric chlorine test using my now 5(?) year old K1000 test kit. Result - 0 to 0.5 ppm total chlorine. I dredged up my similarly old tf-100 kit but couldn't find my "blue" spoon. Chunking a small random amount of reagent powder into a reaction vessel showed no color. After adding ~ 1.8 gal of 7% bleach, I get 1-2ppm total chlorine with the K1000 with a pH of 8-8.2.. Test strips give ~ same result.
1) Are the kits too old to be any good?
2) How much R-0870 powder am I supposed to use?
3) How much difference should the chlorine read between the open pool water and water from the spa fountain?
Thanks,
David - Dallas
