Hayward Super Pump II motor dead and silent

Hi TFP,
Our Hayward Super Pump II motor stopped at some point (I was away from the house) and now makes no noise at all when I try to start it. Here is what I have tried/know so far:

* Power to the pump is confirmed. I even tried a separate cable to the motor and got nothing.
* Bearings are smooth.
* There is no continuity across the capacitor terminals (I think it works). No hum from the capacitor when the power is turned on.
* The centrifugal switch seems to be connected correctly.


I am at a complete loss as to why this does not hum or make ANY noise. If there is a thermal switch, it would've had a long time by now to reset.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

W the power OFF, have your tried to see if the impeller turns freely? However, if an impeller is impeded and all other components are good, you usually hear a hum if you kick on the power. From what you've stated, it seems like it could be the capacitor.

For good measures, have you tried turning off the power to the pump, then the breaker for 15-20 mins, then turn back on, then power up the pump?

The impeller does turn freely. And the test with the other cable was actually done in a separate location (220v).

Interesting comment about the capacitor. Any particular reason you think it is that? I tested for continuity, and the meter read open. That pretty much exhausts my knowledge of capacitors :) There are so few other possibilities that replacing the capacitor certainly sounds like something to consider...

David, I use analog meter to perform a quick test on a capacitor and digital meter to confirm the given value. Not sure what kind of tester you use but youtube has a handful of helpful videos on how to test a motor capacitor using either analog or digital multimeter.

Thanks for the responses. There is definitely full voltage from the wall to the pump. Mea, I ran the only test that I knew how at the time, and then ordered a replacement capacitor for $10 and free 2 day shipping. I am gonna watch the YouTube video, though...
The motor is over 10 years old -- maybe older, so I am taking a leap, although not an expensive one. With all of the other components seemingly in working condition -- bearings, wiring, centrifugal switch, etc., it seems like there are just not that many possibilities.
Plus, when I looked up the correct capacitor for this motor, the rating was different than the one that is currently on the motor. This is the lazy way to troubleshoot, but hopefully it will work.
