First, some details:
1. First time pool owner but have lived in this house with the pool for 6 years.
2. I live in Florida and I never really "close" the pool. I just reduce testing, stop swimming and lower pump run time so it isn't a nightmare when it gets warmer.
3. I have used tfp testing since the beginning. For those first 5 years, the pool turned green on me only 3 times. All of those were times I was out of the country for an extended period and couldn't maintain testing as normal.
After opening this year in march, the pool has turned green on me 4 times now (4th as we speak) and I am not sure why.
With school closed, the kids are home so we did start using the pool earlier than normal. The water looked good then and levels weren't horrible. I adjusted my ph and fc...monitored it, water was clear so the kids started swimming. Within a few days it started turning green. So, I started slamming. ph down to 7.2, pump on high, fc up to 20, daily cleaning of my filter. It took 2 weeks for it to clear up. Once it did I kept running an overnight loss test. Once that passed I put the pump back to low and let the fc drift down to normal level (7 at that time.) By the next week, started turning green again. So again, pump on high, ph down, fc up to 20, daily filter cleaning. It cleared up again...started running overnight test...passed that so pump back to low and let the fc drift down again. Started turning green for a 3rd time by the next week. Ran through the same process...cleared up again and passed the overnight loss test. It is now turning green again.
I have never had this much issue in the 5 prior years. Not too much changed this year: 1. Filter is new, I replaced it when I opened this year. 2. Pollen has been excessively high here. 3. Some of my screens are damaged so I am getting a little more debris in the pool compared to normal but nothing I would call excessive.
I have a 2 speed pump and usually run it on low speed unless I am running the vacuum. So far this year it has been on high almost the entire time. It seems whenever I drop it down to low and let the fc level get down to where I usually keep it, the pool starts turning green again. I am not sure if I have a filtration issue or a chemical issue.
my normal levels:
fc:7
ph:7.5
ta:80
ch:300
cya:40
As I have been essentially constantly slamming, I have mostly only been checking fc. The last full test I did was on 5/2 as it started going green for the 4th time. Levels looked like this then:
fc:11
ph:7.8
ta:80
ch:400
cya:60
