Filter puts sand in pool on pump start

I have been battling this all summer now. Last year I changed out the sand in my filter and everything was fine. This year when I opened the pool I was getting sand in it. I initially thought a lateral was broken.

However, I noticed if I let the filter run 24x7 no sand. If I kept it off no sand. I really started to pay attention. When the filter first turns on I get a cloud of sand out of the return then it stops blowing sand.

How do I go about finding the problem and fixing it? Could it still be a lateral? I was not able to find anything in the search

Please confirm that it is sand,,,,,,,can you pinch it between your thumb and forefinger? It should be gritty feeling and not just "poof" away

Yes it is sand.

Do you know the level of the sand in your filter? It might be a little too high.

Do you have a multiport valve or just a push-pull valve

Multiport. I added 50lbs that is what we used when we installed 6 years ago

It is not completely unusual for a LITTLE sand to get into the pool. To me a "little" would be perhaps a half teaspoon

Have you tried the "rinse" position as you start up.......then go to "filter:?........maybe about a minute but no more than two?
