Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue that I hope some more-informed folks can help me with.

  1. My pool is an inground 15,000 gallon pool located in South Florida.
  2. It's hot and humid most of the year, it rains most days to some extent and my pool is close to the water, so it almost always has a breeze blowing stuff into the pool.
  3. It is an outdoor pool that does not have a screen.
  4. The water itself is clear and I can see right to the deep-end drain cover clearly before I brush the pool.
  5. Currently, I have to run the filter 12-14 hours per day.
  6. It is a cartridge filter system with no in-line chlorinator.
  7. I wash/rinse the filter every day.
  8. I usually use 1 tablet of chlorine in a floating container each week. 2 tablets seems to send the FC level really high.
My issue is that in order to keep the pool bottom looking clean and clear, I have to brush the whole pool, every day (steps, slide walls and the floor). Every time I brush it, there is a light brown-ish colored dust that plumes slightly when brushed. It was not like this when we initially moved into the house.

I use a Taylor testing kit and last night, the sample read:

  • Free Chlorine = 2.0 PPM
  • Combined Chlorine = Less that 0.5 PPM
  • PH = 7.5
  • Alkalinity = 35 PPM
  • Cyuranic Acid = 90 PPM

I've researched this quite a bit and it may be that I have a yellow algae issue. Does that sound accurate?

If so, can someone please advise how much pool shock I may need and more importantly, what the gallon-equivalent is for liquid chlorine? I buy the big yellow jugs of it from Leslie's Pool Supply (local pool-store chain) so I'm not sure what the exact chemical compound is for the chlorine that is sold in those jugs. However, I have 2 of those full jugs right now and would prefer to use what I have as opposed to buying more chemicals.

Thank you for any help!

Sounds like algae. Your FC level is much too low for the given CYA level. Should be at least 10 ppm. Please read this:
