Does Using A Supplemental System Such as CMP Del AOP 25 Change the Parameters that I need to Maintain?

The search engine has been belly-up this morning....

I have installed a CMP Del AOP 25 system on my above ground pool because I got it for a VERY good price and decided it sounded interesting. My question is: Does using this supplemental system change any parameter levels that I should watch for in testing? NOTE: I am using Bromine as my active sanitizer chemical of choice if that makes any difference.

In y our case, kind of.

There are only 3 EPA-approved disinfection alternatives:

Chlorine

Bromine

Baquacil/biguanide/PHMB

In your case the ozone of the system will activate the bromide into bromine sanitizer. But, as it does not provide a residual sainitier in an of itself, this will not allow you to reduce your normal levels of sanitizer.

What about ozone and/or UV? Can't that reduce or eliminate the need for chlorine? In a word, No, and for a very simple reason. Ozone and UV have NO residual effect so again, a residual sanitizer is still needed. The only place these will kill pathogens is in the contact chamber (where the water is exposed to the ozone or UV), not in the pool. Ozone will destroy chlorine but will oxidize organics so it's a two edge sword. You will generally have higher chlorine consumption with ozone than without and it does not allow you to run lower chlorine levels because there is no residual effect from the ozone. The higher bather to water ratio in a spa makes ozone much more useful there than in a pool because it does oxidize organics. Ozone is also toxic in large enough quantities to actually sanitize pool water. For many, ozone is more useful in bromine systems since it will activate the bromide into bromine sanitizer so it works with bromine instead of against it. However, it will cause bromates to form and they are a suspected carcinogen in drinking water!

UV light can kill pathogens and some of the units also produce some ozone but this only occurs in the contact chamber and there is no residual effect in the pool. Once again, more useful in a spa than a pool. UV might be of some value in an indoor pool in conjunction with chlorine to help destroy persistent chloramines.

AOP probably won't do anything noticeable in your water. The ozone might activate some bromide, but the UV will break it right back down.
So if the salesman wants to be truthful, he will say, "This is a great system! It creates some good stuff for you. Unfortunately, it also destroys the stuff that it creates. Therefore, if you start with clean water and monitor your parameters, your water will (probably) stay clean!" Ha, ha! Makes you wonder how these are legal to sell!

It's legal to sell almost anything. They just walk a very fine line by not saying it "replaces" a sanitizer. There is always small print somewhere that says you need one of the three.

Your a gadget person, I can tell from your profile. You like to tinker. Pools are a hobby, just like many other things.

It's just like your ColorQ. Had you asked first, we probably would have recomended against it. But, it's your pool - you get to play.

You are incredibly perceptive! I LOVE gadgets! As for the ColorQ, I knew that it was not top-rated, but I am color-blind to the point where I just can't see minor differences in color of other kits. It reads what I cannot.
