Diluting CYA In Hot Areas

It's crazy that over 99% of the pool professionals on YouTube all promote adding the floating chlorine tabs. I'm new to all this and learning a ton on this site! So I have also been a victim of using tabs for a year. I have a feeling my CYA is high (I need to buy the test kit recommended here).

1) My questions is. Some of the pool pros say that living in hot areas, like Los Angeles, say the pool water will evaporate because of the sun and the new water coming in (via auto refilled) will dilute the CYA which is why they don't worry about recommending the chlorine tablets. Could this be true?

2) Can I just add more water from my hose into the pool to dilute the CYA?

Thank you!!

I am in Phoenix, Az. I’ve used liquid chlorine for over a year without adding any CYA. My CYA level maybe decreased about 10 points over that year. Even that is probably within the margin of error for the test.

Welcome to TFP!

1 - These "pool professionals" don't have a clue.
2 - CYA doesn't evaporate from the pool like water does. The water evaporates and leaves CYA (and other solids) behind. Adding additional fill water keeps the CYA at basically the same level.

Have a look thru Pool Care Basics

We did get a lot of rain this season. About 40% of my pool volume was replaced with rain water. Your CYA level may have come down as a result of the recent rains. Get a recommended test kit and discontinue use of solid/granular forms of chlorine. Post up your test results and we'll steer you in the right direction.

Best wishes!
