Diatomaceous Earth in Canada

Is diatomaceous earth for pools illegal in Canada or something? I cannot find a single filter system, or the D.E. medium, available at any pool store or retail outlet in Canada. The only place I can find it are heavily marked up retails on Amazon.ca ($500+ for a bag) which I suspect are illegitimate. The amazon.com site won't ship to Canada.

Sand Filters won't remove dead (white) algae, and paper filters are not cost effective. Between that and the cost of testing kits, its almost not worth having a pool in Canada.

I imagine if it's that difficult to find it's possibly banned there. There was a recent thread here from a poster in France and they said it was banned in that country.

If you are fighting algae, I guess you could always allow your filter pressure to get slightly higher than normal before backwashing, because the dirtier a sand filter gets, the more finer particles it traps.

Personally this is the first pool I've ever had with a sand filter and I quickly started adding a heaping 1/4 cup of DE after each backwash, more when the pollen or dust gets bad.

You might also try using hairnets in your skimmer basket to help trap smaller particles and extend the time between backwashes. Because they are just a couple cents apiece, I just throw them away.

Good Luck!
