My recommended FC is 3-7ppm based on CYA of 40. Do I need to do the drop test every day since my comparator test only goes up to 5? I have a hard time reading and trusting the comparator test anyway, but it would be nice to just do that one daily.

Do them side by side. You'll eventually see more differences in the block test and can use it to spot check between real tests. It's not very accurate and they dont even rate its accuracy above 4 ppm, but if its good and taxicab yellow, you probably have enough FC to make it through the day.

With frequent testing you'll know what the recent daily demand has been and you'll use that, in conjunction with the approximate color of the block test to dose by your gut.

It will take a while to feel confident with the block test. Most choose to skip it entirely, myself included. The drop tests become second nature quickly and nobody misses the extra 15 seconds from their lives. If you do them side by side long enough, you'll either get better at the block test, or decide its not for you.

I’ve never used the block test
Actually that’s not true. I bought a rainbow kit when we moved into the house and used it for a couple weeks until the pool turned green, then found TFP, the Taylor kit, THEN stopped using the block test. So it’s been 6-ish years.
