Closed Pool - green algae behind pool lights

Just North of Toronto
Hello I am just north of Toronto. Shocked my pool last week and let chlorine levels fall. Water temp was 58F. Added 60% algaecide at max levels per the bottle a day before closing and let it circulate. Yesterday I closed the pool and one of the last things I did was to lower the lights to the bottom of the pool. As I remove them I noticed there was a lot of green algae behind the lights. Is there anything I can do to help prevent opening to a green disaster next spring? Thanks in advance

What’s the current water test results? Can you explain what the “shock” thing you did actually was? What kind of algaecide did you add?

I brought pool up to chlorine shock level based on poolmath app.

Used this bottle of Algaecide.

I’ll have to remove cover to get current test results Which I can do later what levels should I be targeting?

The levels should all be the same as when the pool is open, with the exception of elevated chlorine since you closed recently. It’s likely your FC was too low for a while if you have active algae. That’s the reason for asking for test results. There’s also a check box in the app where you can share your test result history if you’de like.

Does the algaecide mention copper anywhere on it? It looks like it contains the same stuff as polyquat60 so maybe not a bad choice.

You may be limited in what you can do now with the pool closed. You could raise the FC up to SLAM level and then brush out the nook to clean it out. A sump pump can be used to temporarily circulate water if needed.

I don’t think my chlorine levels were too low. I didnt check that often the last month or so but they were actually usually on the higher side ie 5-7 ppm.

I could raise FC to shock levels and put the robotic pool cleaner back in to circulate water.. however if I were to raise FC to shock levels now how would that interact with the Algaecide ? would I shock and if it passes the overnight test, add Algaecide again later?

thanks

Would need to know your CYA level to know if 5-7 is high enough. How do you chlorinate normally? The algaecide is an optional extra, but enough chlorine is a mandatory. If you have algae now, it means you didn’t have enough chlorine in the past.
