Hey Guys ! Long time reader, first time poster.
I've got a in-ground 16x32 Vinyl lined pool(~19,000 Gallons) and I very recently replaced a 20 year old Hayward Sand Filter & Pump with a Hayward EC75A Perflex D.E. Filter / Pump. This setup has proven to be challenging to me.
When I first installed the equipment, my pool was green after sitting all winter. That being said I used the S.L.A.M method to bring the water up to shock level for several days until it cleared up and passed the overnight chlorine loss test.
Chemical wise, there doesn't seem to be much of a problem. The water is a bit cloudy, but overall its improving daily...
BUT i've been pulling my hair out with this new D.E. Filter. As soon as I started the filter and did the initial pre-coat with 7 lbs (10 Blue cups) of powder, I would only get 20-30 minutes of run time before the pressure (10 PSI Clean) would jump to and above 20 PSI. After much research I attributed this to a build up of algae and though it was normal... when it gets to the high pressure state, I would 'bump' the unit and the pressure would stay down for another 20-30 minutes... After a day or two when the filter would no longer 'bump' down, I would 'backwash' it and replace 80% of the D.E. as is required. All of this is to be expected with a D.E. Filter and green pool as far as I can tell. However as I progressed thru the SLAM process the water cleared up, the algae disappeared but the short cycles continued.
Thinking that my fingers(?) were caked with buildup I decided to take apart the filter and soak them with filter cleaner obtained from my local pool supply shop. Mind you, the fingers didn't look even a little bit dirty, but I soaked overnight anyway.
but the problem persists. My water is clean, i've been thru 8 cases of liquid shock and 3 25 lb bags of D.E. in the past two weeks and am honestly at a complete loss as to what on earth is STILL causing my filter to short cycle...
I was noticing air bubbles coming out of the returns, but some teflon tape on the pre-pump union took care of that quickly during the early SLAM'ing.
Can anybody offer any additional advice ? What would make a brand new Perflex D.E. short cycle with clean water/clean fingers and fresh powder ???
