I've been lurking for awhile and doing a lot of reading. I've caught up on the majority of information that I need to know to maintain a proper pool.

The original reason for venturing through these forums was because I had an iron stain problem (my pool is filled with well water that has a lot of iron). I learned about doing the Vitamin C treatment which cleared it up beautifully. I since then have been topping it up with Metal Magic. The stains haven't come back and the pool hasn't looked this blue in years. My current problem was while adjusting the chemistry after doing the treatment I have seem to have added too much stabilizer to the pool. I had been using test strips (shame on me). It was reading low so I added 3 gallons of liquid stabilizer to my 20,000 - 22,000 gallon pool. I just recently got a Taylor kit and my reading are as follows:

FC = 12
TC = 0
pH = 7.6
TA = 140
CH = 290
CYA = 100-120

I don't think I needed stabilizer.

The start of this month I was met with an algae bloom that originated from the attached spa and found its way into my skimmers. It was along the walls closer to the skimmers and near the steps. I started a SLAM process, but I thought my CYA was closer to 60 so I only rose the FC levels to 25~ ppm for about 2-3 days. I also scrubbed the walls pretty much every day, as well as drained and refilled the spa twice. The algae has pretty much all but disappeared but there is still some green in tight corners and a little bit in areas close to the surface. I was planning on doing another SLAM now that I know what my CYA actually is. My main question is should I drain the pool and refill with well water. This will in turn cause me to have to raise the calcium (my well water has no hardness) and sequestrate levels again. Or do I just SLAM it and bring the chlorine levels to 39+ppm? I really want to be done with this algae issue and feel safe using my pool again, but draining and filling 10,000 gallons of water is a bit daunting after I spent so much money and time balancing the current water. What options do I have?

Did you use the cya dilution test? Bottom line is your water is no longer balanced. I think you'll need to do a 50% water replacement to get your cya down.

Hello! I did do the black dot test and it was reading between 100-120. My eyes were straining a bit. I also diluted it with 50% tap water and tested again and it disappeared around the 50-60 mark. I was able to get rid of the algae so far. The pool looks perfect again. Blue and no noticeable algae on the steps/walls. Right now would be expensive to bring water in and I was hopping to wait another month until I drain and fill the pool. Would keeping the FC around a minimum of 10 be enough to keep the algae down in the meantime? Would the pool/spa be usable??

I also did an OCLT and it dropped 1ppm from dusk to dawn.

Thanks for you guys' knowledge and insight. I really appreciate it!
