Aqua Lumin II 120v model hooked up to a 12v transformer? Can I bypass transformer?

So this is my first pool and first summer in this house. I am just getting the pool up and running and noticed the light was not working. I removed the fixture and found it is an Aqua Lumin II that takes a 250watt 120volt T3 style bulb. There was some obvious water leakage and the old bulb was totally shot. I cleaned everything up in there and put in a new 120v 250watt bulb and it did not work. I worked my back from the breaker to a Intermatic low voltage transformer. Inside one of the wires to the pool light was disconnected so I reconnected it. The bulb glows now but that is about it. The transformer is taking the 120volts down to 12. My fixture is a 120v fixture with a 120v bulb... I am wondering if I can just bypass this transformer or if it is there for safety reasons. I don't understand how the previous owners had this setup it seems sort of half ***. Can anyone guide me in the right direction here? I don't want to bypass if it is unsafe to do so. I was thinking one option might be to get a 12volt bulb but if the fixture calls for 120v why not do it properly? Any help would be appreciated I really don't know much about this just learning.
