Liquid Chlorine
Good evening, new to owning a pool and looking for advice. We drained and refilled the pool this spring to start fresh as this is new to us. Per TFP I’m going with all liquid chlorine but we needed to raise the CyA. I bought granular CYA and it says to add it slowly to the skimmer basket which I started to but it instantly shot into the pool from the jet underneath the skimmer basket and settled on the bottom. Thankfully it wasn’t a lot. Is something not set up correctly that caused this? I’m going to use the sock method now to be safe but just curious because If the powder did that, I imagine other debris is doing the same thing.
Pentair Pump with cartridge filter.

Exactly! :goodjob: We never dump the granules into the skimmer. It can clog the line, it's acidic and not great for the pump, and the granules will just sit in the filter for days. The sock method is best. Once you add the required amount ot the sock. let the sock soak for about 30 minutes. Then take the sock over to your return jets and squeeze out all the mushy stabilizer. Easy stuff - done.

Welcome to TFP!

It's possible the pipe underneath the skimmer is actually a suction or equalizer line attached to that skimmer (as opposed to a pool return). If you look at the bottom of your skimmer, you might see two ports. One goes to the pump for suction and the other may go down to the pool wall below the skimmer. This would explain why the CYA dropped through the port and onto the bottom.
