A spool is a very large spa, in many ways a cross between a spa and a pool. They are always larger than a spa and are normally smaller than the average pool. They cost nearly as much to build as a full sized pool and can get very expensive to heat if you keep them at spa temperatures (which is what you would normally do). They can be a great choice if want to swim around a little but your yard is too limited for a pool. The price tends to be high for what you get. Most people spending that much choose to get a full size pool.
There are fiberglass pools that might fit the bill for you if you can spare about 2 more feet in the length. Check out the San Juan Pools catalog: http://www.sanjuanpools.com/pools.html
The main difference between a small fiberglass pool and a 'spool' or large spa is that the pools will have more 'swimming' area and less seating (and won't have the jets, but you CAN add therapy jets to a pool if you like). You can see what I mean by looking at the San Juan Spa catalog: http://www.sanjuanpools.com/spas.html
Other fiberglass companies probably have similar offerings.
If you're still interested, my wife and I just finished ours just over a month ago and it was a great experience. Everyone that sees it says: "this is exactly what I want". Let me know if you have any questions.
