Intex grids

Hello All, my husband and I just purchased a new intex metal frame pool. We got the 20' x 52" with the sand pump. My concern/ question that we can't seem to figure out is; the pump and filter are up and running just fine but we have noticed that the on wall skimmers don't suck anything down into the skimmer basket attached at the pump. We aren't sure if we aren't doing everything right. Water definitely flows down the hoses to the skimmer basket. Can we remove the grids on the wall
mounts inside the pool to help get a better cleaning of the pool?

Just be aware that the ones on the suction side are there to prevent a child from being held under water should their hair or something get sucked into that opening. Sorry to sounds like a nag, but it is true.
