Really stupid question - does the big o ring on intake / outlet go inside or outside

Hi There.
Apologies for the stupid question - should I put the big o ring on the inside wall of the pool (AG Intex 18'x9') or on the outside ? - I am talking about where the inlet / outlet connects through the wall to the filter Hoses.

reason I ask is that I have a small leak at the outlet - most likely due to a slightly deformed o- ring (the smaller one that sits at the join of the hose to outlet connection) - I've lowered the water level so I can change it and while I've done that I thought I would check that I've put the big o ring on the correct side to start with (it was previously sitting against the inside of the pool wall on both the inlet and outlet holes).

I'm not 100% certain, but I think mine are on the outside.

Inside definitely.

Putting it on the outside will highly deform the gasket when you attempt to tighten the nut down on top of it. It will twist and bulge.
