I have come across this forum while looking for help. My family and I have a in-ground pool that is about 12,000 gallons. In hopes to help my parents as we go on this journey I decided to look for help here. The family we rent from told us to empty the pool to start over, so we did! As I write this, our pool is filling up (it is about halfway full). My question is what do we do once the pool if full? Any help that this wonderful forum can supply will be greatly appreciated!

Well, I'll be blunt. We teach a different kind of pool care here. Nothing many folks who have had pools or pool stores will teach you. We believe in accurate testing and only adding what the pool needs, when it needs it. We don't trust folks at the pool store who are there to sell us stuff, because - well, they are going to try to sell us stuff. Weather we need it or not.
To follow the pool care methods taught here you need to arm yourself with the knowledge and tools necessary to care for your pool.
The knowledge is condensed in the Pool School link at the top of every page. It is a great community here, but we do ask that you read and try to understand the information being taught. Questions are always welcome and folks will try to direct you and teach you the methods.
The tools are not limited to the brushes, vacuum hoses and other stuff you use around the pool, but include the most important item - one of the recommended test kits. You can buy a kit at a pool store, but again the pool store kits generally won't cut it. To effectively practice the TFPC methods, the FAS/DPD chlorine test is essential. All these kits contain that test while very few other kits do. Think of it this way, do you see a doctor blindly prescribing drugs without seeing the patient or having tests run? Here at TFP we are going to ask for photos so we can see the condition of the water and are going to ask for a full set of test results.

Welcome to tfp Haley. Why did they have you empty the pool? The best thing you can do is read through pool school a couple times til it starts sinking in, and ask questions in this thread about anything that you don't understand. Order one of the recommended test kits and you'll be able to know exactly what you're pool needs and not blindly dump in the $$$ and magic potions the pool store will ultimately sell you.

+1 on this. I did this with my new pool and these guys have yet to steer me wrong. It will take a few weeks for you to understand everything, but the guys here are great and always willing to help. Once you stabilize and balance the new water...the testing and adjusting will only take about 30 minutes a week.
To help start you on your journey, pH is the most important, followed by Free Chlorine (FC) and Combine Chlorine (CC). Once you get that stuff down, move to learning about TA, and CTA...then CH. Don't feel like you have to learn it all at once. Go in the order I mentioned and you'll have 80% of the knowledge you need in just a couple of days.
