There is a chlorine allergy, but it is extremely rare. I have never heard of anyone allergic to any of the other common pool chemicals.
Hmmm.. I think I'm one of the very small number of unlucky people.
I have always been itchy in pools, as long I can remember anyway. The weird thing is that I start to itch while I'm still in the water. :? Every pool I can remember being in(a lot of hotel pools) Indoor and out make me itch. It mostly affects my legs, but the rest of me will itch to.
The ONLY thing that has ever helped me (and thank god for it) is Mary Kay Sunscreen. I'm not sure why, no other lotion or sunscreen will help. If I put on the sunscreen before I get in a pool I have no problem, but if it gets rubbed off in one area, I itch in that spot only.
The reason I think it is chlorine is because I did an experiment at the beginning of this summer. I started out with a slightly high chlorine level and I itched. I went in every day as it dropped and when it was nearly gone, wha-la, no itch. Although it just occured to me, that at the time of the test, there was no CYA in the pool (we use tri-chlor in the beginning of the year as an Easy way to maintain chlorine and build CYA.
I also did the experiment more recently but it was to see if chlorine was causing burning eyes. Our CYA is 60 and I let it go from 8 to 0 and I had a little itch until it went down to 5.
Sorry if I kind of hi-jacked the thread.
