Plug main drain, add two wall drains connecting to a skimmer

My pool is is being remodeled for 2 additional returns, skimmer replacement at the same location and main drain conversion for entrapment prevention.

I have no idea of how old the pool is but the house was built in 60's.
Pool characteristics:
1. 25K oval
2. metal pipes
3. two layers of plaster
4. one 1.5" return
5. one skimmer
6. one main drain at the deepest spot
7. one suction pipe leads to the filter pump. I think the skimmer and the main drain are teed together somewhere underground or at the skimmer.

PB suggests plugging the old main drain and adding two wall drains, which will be connected through the new skimmer.

1. Any thought on PB's suggestion?

2. How about converting current main drain to a return port to increase rolling circulation from the bottom of the pool? Should I be concerned about the condition of the metal pipes?
